Nucleosides are the basic building blocks of nucleotides and nucleic acids (RNA and DNA). A nucleoside consists of a sugar molecule (either ribose in RNA or deoxyribose in DNA) attached to a nitrogen-containing nucleobase. The nucleobases used in DNA are adenine (A), cytosine (C), guanine (G) and thymine (T). In RNA, the nucleobase uracil (U) replaces thymine. DNA and RNA molecules are polymers made up of long chains of nucleosides. Nucleosides have diverse functions in cellular processes, well beyond their role as building blocks of nucleic acids. They play critical roles in biological energy storage and transmission, signaling, regulation of various aspects of metabolism, and even as important antioxidants and enzyme cofactors.
