Nucleotides are the basic building blocks of nucleic acids (RNA and DNA). A nucleotide consists of a sugar molecule (either ribose in RNA or deoxyribose in DNA), a nitrogen-containing nucleobase, and one or more phosphate groups. The nucleobases used in DNA are adenine (A), cytosine (C), guanine (G) and thymine (T). In RNA, the nucleobase uracil (U) replaces thymine. DNA and RNA molecules are polymers made up of long chains of nucleotides. Nucleotides have diverse functions in cellular processes, well beyond their role as building blocks of nucleic acids. They play critical roles in biological energy storage and transmission, signaling, regulation of various aspects of metabolism, and even as important antioxidants and enzyme cofactors. Moreover, nucleotides and their derivatives have significant therapeutic applications. Many antiviral and anticancer drugs are nucleotide analogs (in vivo) that interfere with nucleic acid synthesis in pathogens or cancer cells. Nucleotide analogs can inhibit DNA or RNA replication, making them valuable in the treatment of viral infections and certain types of cancer.
