Nucleotide-sugars are the activated building blocks for the biosynthesis of carbohydrates, oligosaccharides, and glycan conjugates. Their metabolism is particularly well studied in yeast, fungal pathogens, and bacterial pathogens, such as Escherichia coli and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. These pathways are also studied in plants, but the enzymes involved are less well understood.
