Amino Acids
Amino acids are the precursor bulding blocks of proteins. Each amino acid contains a central carbon, a hydrogen, a carboxyl group, an amino group, and a variable R group. While there are over 500 amino acids in nature, 22 are by far the most important which are incorporated into proteins. One of the most useful ways to classify the 22 canonical amino acids is based on the properties of the R group: Group I – Nonpolar Amino Acids (glycine, alanine, valine, leucine, isoleucine, proline, phenylalanine, methionine, and tryptophan), Group II – Polar, Uncharged Amino Acids (serine, cysteine, threonine, tyrosine, asparagine, and glutamine), Group III – Acidic Amino Acids (aspartic acid and glutamic acid), and Group IV – Basic Amino Acids (arginine, histidine, and lysine).
Amino acids are also precursors of a variety of complex nitrogen-containing molecules. Prominent among these are the nitrogenous base components of nucleotides and the nucleic acids (DNA and RNA). Several amino acids (or their derivatives) act as chemical messengers and neurotransmitters such as gamma-aminobutyric acid (derived from glutamic acid), serotonin and melatonin (derivatives of tryptophan), and histamine (derived from histidine). Thyroxine (a derivative of tyrosine) and indole acetic acid (a tryptophan derivative found in plants) are two examples of hormones.
